Default Picket Fences! Part 1

Picket Fences! Part 1

Buford Falls was just like any other small town in the South in the late 1940's. The houses were nice, but not by any means the most expensive. When our story begins, there's five houses on Shadetree Lane. That's Joy Anderson and her best friend Mary Lou Edwards gossiping over the picket fence that seperates their lots.

Joy lives in this white frame house with a green picket fence. She''s been living here since she and her husband Larry got married.

Joy and Larry both grew up in Buford Falls and got married right after they graduated from high school. They have a six year old daughter named Arlene.

Mary Lou lives next door in this red brick house with a white picket fence. She's been living here for six years. Mary Lou and her husband Peter have been living in Buford Falls all their lives. They got married a year after they graduated from high school.

Mary Lou and Peter have a three year old daughter named Julie.

This house with the brown siding and a brown picket fence is on the other side of Joy's house.

Ben and Betty Jones are the neighbors who live here. Like Joy and Larry, Betty and Ben got married right after high school. They have a six year old daughter named Judy and two year old son named Mike.

There's another white frame house with a white picket fence across the street where neighbors Emily and Sam Martin live.

Emily and Sam moved from Veronaville to Buford Falls a little over a year ago. They have been married three years and have a son Jimmy who is almost two year's old.

The white frame house next door to the Martin's had been empty since elderly Grace Sawyer died last year. The neighbors on Shadetree Lane have been waiting and wondering what was to become of the house. Grace was an old maid and had no relatives that anyone knew about.

Then one day the waiting and wondering was over when he moved in . . .

Joy and Mary Lou hurried across the street to greet their new neighbor. His name is Rhys Sawyer and he's from Pleasantview. He says he's Grace's grandson but as far as anyone knows, she didn't have any childern. Or did she?

Default Picket Fences! Part 2

Picket Fences! Part 2

When Rhys Sawyer moved into the empty house on Shadetree Lane, his neighbors Joy and Mary Lou came to welcome him to the neighborhood.

"Would you ladies like to come in and have a cup of coffee?" asked Rhys.

"I'd love to but I left my baby asleep in her crib. I only intended to be gone a few minutes" said Mary Lou.

"I'd love to have a cup Rhys", said Joy, "I don't have anyone waiting at home."

"Bye y'all", said Mary Lou.

Rhys made a pot of coffee and carried two cups into the livingroom. He handed her a cup and sit down beside her on the sofa.

"Rhys, you said Grace was your grandmother, right?", asked Joy.

"Yeah, she was my dad's mother", he said.

"All us in town were under the impression that she was an old maid", said Joy.

"I don't know much about her. I was sent to an orphanage after my parents died. I didn't even know I had a grandmother until I got the letter from her lawyer, saying I was her sole heir", he explained.

"How long have you and your husband been living in Buford Falls?" he asked.

"We both were born in Buford Falls. Larry and I went to grammer school together and started dating when we were in high school. Then we got married right after we graduated", she said, "Mary Lou and Peter did the same thing. Seems like we've all been friends forever".

"Have you ever been married?", she asked.

"NO, I never have been or ever wanted to be", he said.

"It's not that bad. You should try it", she laughed.

"That's alright. I'll take your word for it", he said.

Rhys put a record on the record player and started dancing to the music.

"Come over here and dance with me", he said.

"This is the first time I've danced in a long time", she said.

"Don't you and Larry ever dance?", he asked.

"We use to but he's always too tired now when he comes home from work.", she said.

"What does Larry do for a living?", asked Rhys.

"He's a Field Researcher. I don't know exactly what that is, but he makes good money", she said.

"Well, while he's making the money, you can come over here and dance with me", said Rhys.

"It's getting late. I best be getting on home. My daughter will be home from school at 3:30", she said.

"You're welcome to come back for coffee anytime", he said.

"Thank you Rhys", she said, giving him a friendly hug.

Then Joy left to go home.

Default Picket Fences! Part 3

Picket Fences! Part 3

The next morning Joy got a telephone call.

"Hello" she said.

"Joy, this is Mary Lou. What did you do at Rhys' house yesterday? You stayed in there an awful long time."

"We sit in his livingtoom and chatted while we had coffee", said Joy, "I'll talk to you later Mary Lou. I got to fix breakfast. Larry's getting up."

"Alright, bye" said Mary Lou.

"Who was that on the telephone?" asked Larry.

"Just Mary Lou" said Joy.

The schoolbus and Larry's carpool pulled up in front of the house at the same time.

Larry hurried out to catch his ride. He couldn't afford to be late if he wanted that promotion at work.

And Arlene ran out the door to catch the schoolbus. The busdriver was honking the horn like it was a matter of life or death.

After Joy cleaned up the kitchen and dressed for the day, the telephone started ringing again.

"Hello" she said.

"Hey beautiful! You want to meet me downtown at the coffee shop?" asked Rhys.

"I don't know if I should or not" she said.

"It's just a cup of coffee at a public place" he said, "What's the harm in that?"

"Well, alright. I'll meet you there", she said.

The taxicab arrived a few minutes later. With a still undecided look on her face, Joy was on her way to the coffee shop to meet Rhys.

Rhys was waiting in front of The Handle and Spout when she stepped out of the taxicab.

"Hey beautiful. Why do you look so nervous?" he asked.

"I feel guilty about being out with anybody but Larry" she said.

"You're just going to drink a cup of coffee with me. There's nothing wrong with that", he said.

"You're right. I'm just being silly" she said.

"Rhys have you ever wondered who your grandfather was?" asked Joy.

"That all happened a long time ago. My grandfather was just someone who used Grace and then threw her away when she got pregnant" he said, "I figure she wanted to make ammends to my dad by leaving everything she owned to me."

"I really should be getting home. If Larry was to call or if Arlene was to get sick at school nobody knows where I am" she said.

"You worry too much about stuff that hasn't even happened" he said.

"I'm just cautious" she said.

"I think you'll be happier if you 'threw caution to the wind' " said Rhys.

"I think I better go home now" she said.

"Anything you say beautiful" said Rhys.

Then Joy called a taxicab.

Rhys gave her a hug goodbye . . .

And she left to go home.

Picket Fences! Part 4

It's Thrusday morning in Buford Falls. At Mary Lou Anderson's house on Shady Lane . . .

Her husband Peter, a Field Researcher waved goodbye on his way out the door.

Peter's carpool came at 8:30 AM in order to get him to work at 9AM.

Mary Lou and Peter's daughter Julie left at 8:30 AM to catch the schoolbus. Today is Julie's first day of school.

When the telephone rang Mary Lou answered "Hello!"

"Mary Lou this is Emily. Can I come over for a short visit this morning?"

"Sure come on over" said Mary Lou.

When Emily came in the backdoor, Mary Lou noticed immediately that she was wearing a maternity top.

"Oh Emily, I'm so excited for you and Sam. When is the baby due?" she asked.

"I'm not exactly sure yet. I got an appointment with Dr. Brian tomorrow morning. Will you go with me?", she asked.

"Sure, I'd love to go. We can go to lunch afterwards. My treat", Mary Lou said.

"Your belly is already pretty big. You might be expecting twins", she said.

"Sam would be thrilled if I have twins this time. He wants a big family" said Emily.

"Mary Lou gave Emily a goodbye hug. I'll see you in the morning", she said.

Emily left to go back home.

Then Mary Lou called Joy.

"How about coming over and telli me all about Mr. Rhys Sawyer."

"I'll be there in a few minutes" said Joy.

"What did you find out about Rhys when you stayed in his house for two hours the other day?" asked Mary Lou.

"Well, he said he was sent to an orphanage after his parents died. That's where he grew up" said Joy.

"I wonder why Grace didn't get custody of Rhys after he was orphaned. She would have been the logical choice to raise him", she said.

"You would think so, but I guess she didn't want to explain having a child living here when the whole town thought she was an old maid. It would have been a real scandal back then. She would have never lived down the embarassment", said Joy,"It just seems a shame that Rhys grew up in an orphanage when he had family", said Mary Lou.

"Yeah, he said he didn't know he had a grandmother until he got the letter from Grace's lawyer.", said Joy, "Rhys thinks Grace tried to make amends to his dad by leaving him everything she owned."

"I wonder who it was that Grace loved enough to have a child with", said Mary Lou.

"Rhys said it was someone who just used Grace and then threw her away when she got pregnant", said Joy.

"Well, we should help Rhys find a nice single girl to marry, so he can start his own family", said Mary Lou.

"When I asked him if he had ever been married, he told me he never had or ever wanted to be. I told him it wasn't that bad and he said he would take my word for it", said Joy.

"If he meets the right girl, he'll change his mind", said Mary Lou.

"I saw Emily when she was going back home. I didn't know she and Sam were planning on having another child", said Joy.

"Oh yes, she said Sam wanted a big family and he would be thrilled if she had twins. I'm going with her to the doctor's in the morning. I'm taking her to lunch afterwards. I thought we'd go to the pizze parlor", said Mary Lou.

"Well I'm happy for them then. I got to be getting on home. I haven't even made the beds this morning", said Joy.

"Bye Joy", called Mary Lou.

"Bye Mary Lou", she answered.

That night at Joy and Larry's house . . .

When the telephone started ringing Joy answered.

"Hello", she said.

"Hey beautiful. Can you meet me tomorrow someplace? I want to see you again", he said.

"I guess I can", she said, "Call me in the morning."

"Alright I will", said Rhys.

"Who was that on the telephone?", asked Larry.

"Oh, just Mary Lou. She's going with Emily to the doctor's and wanted to know if I wanted to go with them", said Joy.

"What's wrong with Emily?", he asked.

"She's pregnant", said Joy.

"You know, I wouldn't mind us having another baby. It would be kinda nice having a little brother for Arlene. Don't you think?", he said.

"I'll think about it. Alright?", she answered.

"Goodnight sweetheart", he said.

"Goodnight", she said.

"You coming to bed?", he asked.

"I'll be on in a little while", she said.

Default Picket Fences! Part 5

Picket Fences! Part 5

The next morning over at Rhys Sawyer's house . . .

Jasmyn Carlson, his maid from Service cleaned up the kitchen and . . .

Made up Rhys' bed.

He walked into the bedroom . . .

"Hey beautiful", he said.

"Good morning", said.Jasmyn

Then reached behind her and gave her "a goose".

"Ow!", she screamed, "Why did you do that?"

"Because I felt like it and could", he laughed.

"I'm finished with my work. Do you want me to stay and hang out?", she asked.

"No, not today. I got to meet someone downtown. I'll see you again Monday", he said.

Rhys picked up the telephone and called Joy.

"Hey beautiful. Can you meet me at the zoo. That should be public enough to suit you", he said.

"Alright I'll meet you at the front gate", she said.

Rhys took a quick shower . . .

And left to meet Joy.

At Joy's house, she was leaving to go to Buford Falls Zoo.

Meanwhile at Buford Falls Hospital . . .

Dr. Brian and his wife Nurse Jane were taking care of patients as usual.

Emily Martin was chatting with Mary Lou Edwards while she waited to see Dr. Brian. Emily would probably have her baby at home, but needed to be checked out by the doctor just in case.

Their neighbor Betty Jones was in the waiting room with her son Mike. He wasn't feeling well this morning and missed school.

They went into one of the examining rooms with Dr. Brian.

"What seems to be wrong with Mike, Betty?", he asked.

"He said he didn't feel good. So I let him stay home this morning", she said, "I hated for him to miss school on his first day."

"Mike, were you excited when you grew up and discovered you were big enough to go to school?", said Dr. Brian.

"Nope", answered Mike.

"Mike, you have a case of Simschoolitis. Since today is Friday, I think you will be all better by Monday. If you're not, I'll give your mama some nasty tasting medicine to give you. Alright?", said the doctor.

"Yes sir", said Mike.

Emily was next and went into the examining room. After Dr. Brian checked her out, he said "Emily, you and your babies are as healthy as can be."

"Babies?", she asked.

"Yes, you're carrying twins", he said.

"I'm finished. Let's go have lunch. I'm starving", said Emily.

Default Picket Fences! Part 6

Picket Fences! Part 6

At Buford Falls Zoo . . .

When Rhys arrived . . .

Joy was waiting for him.

"Where have you been? I felt like a fool standing out here alone. What would I have said if somebody I knew had come by?", she said.

"I called the taxicab right after I talked to you. I told you you worry too much about stuff that hasn't happened", he said.

"Let's go ride the ferris wheel first", he said.

"I haven't been on one of those since I was a child", she said.

"I never got to ride one when I was a child. At the orphanage we didn't get to go anywhere but to school and church", he said.

They rode the ferris wheel for nearly an hour. When Joy finally persuded Rhys to do something else . . .

They went to see the wolves.

"It's nice sitting here with you. I feel like a teenager again", she said.

"If that was the case, I'd be to old for YOU", he laughed.

"Rhys, do you think it matters that I'm older than you?", she asked.

"No, I think people are only as old as they feel", he said.

Then they went to the aquarium to see a whale.

"He's huge! I'd hate to get attacked by him", said Joy.

"How about me then", joked Rhys.

"I think I'd have a fighting chance with you", she laughed.

"You'll never know until it happens", he said.

"NO that's alright. I'll take your word for it", she said.

"I'm getting hungry, let's go over to the picnic area", she said.

"Anything you say beautiful", he said.

Rhys cooked hotdogs for their lunch.

"I met Sam Martin the other day. He invited me to come for supper. He seems like a nice fellow. He's a Military Recruit and told me that would be a good career for me. I told him I didn't need to work and looked at me like I was nuts."

"Well most folks around here have to work for a living. You should consider yourself lucky to inherit a house and enough money to support yourself", she said.

"Yeah, I'm lucky alright", he said.

After they finished lunch Rhys jumped into the hottub and Joy joined him.

"What, you going to sit over there all by yourself? Come over here with me", he said.

"I guess it will be alright", she said.

"Now this is much better", he said.

Then Rhys grabbed Joy and gave her a romantic kiss.

"Rhys, I best be getting home. Arlene will be home from school and Larry will be coming home from work before long", she said.

Joy hurried to get out of the hottub.

"What are you afraid of Joy", asked Rhys.

"Nothing. I just don't want to be late getting home", she said.

Picket Fences! Part 7

Joy made it home before Arlene got off the schoolbus and before Larry's carpool dropped him off from work.

"Did you have a good day at work?", Joy asked.

"Yes, everything was fine", he said.

"That's good", she said, "I'll get supper ready while you change."

Joy fixed spagetti for supper. Since her mind was on other things . . .

She had burned it.

"I'm sorry the spagetti is burned. I'll fix you something else if you want", she said.

"No, it's alright. Just a little overdone", he said.

"I'm up for that promotion at work. If I get it, I'll make more money and work less hours ", said Larry.

"Well that sounds like a good deal. You deserve it", she said.

The family watched television together for a couple of hours.

When it was Arlene's bedtime she gave her daddy a goodnight hug . . .

Then she hugged her mama goodnight.

After Arlene fell asleep, Larry and Joy relaxed on their bed.

"I didn't want to say it in front of Arlene, but the bonus that comes with that promotion will pay for everything we'll need for the baby", he said.

"I haven't decided yet if I want to have another one", she said

"Larry, I still need time to think about it", she said.

"Alright, let's just do woo hoo. We don't have to try for a baby this time", he said.

Then they did woo hoo . . .

Afterwards Larry and Joy both fell asleep.

The next morning over at Mary Lou's house.

Larry gave Mary Lou a tender kiss goodbye before his carpool arrived to take him to work.

The schoolbus came to pick up Julie an hour later.

Mary Lou called Joy . . .

"I'll make a fresh pot of coffee. Come on over and help me drink it."

"Alright Mary Lou, I'll be there in a few minutes."

When Joy arrived at Mary Lou's she poured herself a cup of coffee and sit down.

"How did Emily's doctor's appointment go yesterday?"

"Dr. Brian told her the babies were an healthy as they could be. We didn't have to wait too long. The only other patient there was Betty's little boy Mike. I didn't dare ask her what was wrong. You know how she is?"

"She must be happy about having twins. She and Sam want a big family", said Joy, "but you know something. I wish I had never told Larry that Emily was pregnant. Now he wants to have another baby. He said 'It would be kinda nice if we had a little brother for Arlene."

"So what did you say to that?", asked Mary Lou.

"I told him I wasn't sure I wanted to go through that again, but I would think about it", said Joy.

"Well, you shouldn't have told him you'd think about it. Now he'll pester you until you say yes", Mary Lou said.

"Mary Lou, I need a big favor from you", said Joy.

"Sure, you know I'll do anything for you", she said, "We've best friends. You're like the sister I never had."

"Well, just if Larry happens to ask, tell him I went with you and Emily to the doctor's yesterday. Alright?"

"Sure", she said, "And I'm not even going to ask you why."

"Thank you Mary Lou. You're the best best friend anyone could have", said Joy.

Default Picket Fences! Part 8

Picket Fences! Part 8

It's Monday morning at Rhys Sawyer's house . . .

The maid Jasmyn Carlson came and went in less than an hour. She told Rhys she wasn't feeling well this morning. She thought she might have the flu.

Rhys went outside and gave his gardener Elsie Phillips a $100 tip.

"Elsie you did a great job on my yard', he said.

"Thank you Rhys, you're the best", she said.

A few minutes later Elsie came inside.

"I've finished my work, do you want me to stay and hangout?", she asked.

"Sure Beautiful, I know something we can do", said Rhys.

Then he carried her into the bedroom and . . .

Put her on his bed and they madeout.

"Do you want me Elsie?", he asked.

"Yes", she answered.

Woo Hoo!

"Do you want me to stay longer?", she asked.

"No, not today. I'll see you tomorrow", he said.

Then Elsie left to go home.

Rhys took a shower and . . .

Changed into a fresh outfit.

He went over to the telephone and called Joy.

"Hey Beautiful", he said, "Can you come over?"

"We're just sitting down to breakfast. I'm still in my nightgown", she said.

"Now that I'd like to see", laughed Rhys.

"Call me later", she told him.

"Who was that on the telephone?", asked Larry.

"Just Mary Lou", said Joy.

"What did she want so early in the morning?", he asked.

"She asked me over for coffee", said Joy.

"Mary Lou should know we have breakfast this time every morning", he said.

"I guess she just wasn't thinking", said Joy.

Arlene and Larry left for school and work at 8:30 AM.

When the telephone started ringing, Joy answered.

"Hello!"

"Hey Beautiful! I saw Larry leaving. Can you come over now?"

"Alright, I'll be there in a few minutes", she said.

Joy left by her backdoor to walk over to Rhys' house. She was hoping none of the neighbors would see her.

When she got to his house Rhys was waiting for her right inside his backdoor.

"Hey Beautiful", he said, "I missed you."

"I missed you, too", she said.

"I'm sorry I called too early this morning. I hope it didn't cause any problems", said Rhys.

" Larry asked me who was calling so early. I told him it was Mary Lou", she said.

"I hated being forced to live on a schedule at the orphanage. Now I just do everything whenever I please", he said.

"Well some people like organization", she said.

"Like you?", he asked.

"Yes, like me", she said, nuzzeling his neck.

Rhys gave her a romantic kiss and she kissed him back.

"We both know where this is going. Let's go relax on my bed where we'll be more comfortable", he said.

"Alright, but I'm NOT going to do woo hoo", she said.

"Anything you say Beautiful", he said.

Rhys relaxed on his bed and waited for Joy to join.

"Come over here with me", he said.

Joy looked uncertain but . . .

She did as Rhys asked.

He gave her a romantic kiss.

"Do you want me Joy?", he asked.

"Yes", she said

"You need to be sure. Once it's done there's no going back", said Rhys.

"I'm sure Rhys", she said.

Woo Hoo!

"Did you enjoy that as much as I did?", he asked.

"Yes, you're incredible", she answered.

"What's wrong?", he asked.

"It's getting late. I got to get home", she said.

"Stay just a little longer, please", he said.

"I'm sorry, I can't", she said.

Then Joy left to go home.

She walked across Rhys' backyard, walked across the street and over to her own backyard. She hoped this round-about way home would keep anyone from seeing her.

But as fate would have it, just about that time, Mary Lou was calling her. When she didn't get an answer . . .

She looked out the window and saw Joy coming from Rhys' house.

Joy entered her own house by the backdoor.

She took a quick bath, changed clothes and . . .

Fell asleep on the sofa.

Default Picket Fences! Part 9

Picket Fences! Part 9

Joy didn't wake up from her nap until almost 3 PM. She hurried to get suppe ready before Larry and Arlene came home. She decided to fix macoroni and cheese. It was quick and it also happened to be Larry's favorite

"My teacher is taking the whole class to the zoo", said Arlene.

"You'll enjoy seeing all the animals and they have a huge whale", said Joy.

When the telephone started ringing Joy answered . . .

"Hello!"

"Joy it's Mary Lou. I called you this afternoon and you weren't home."

"I'm sorry, I was taking a nap and must not have heard the telephone ringing", explained Joy.

"Well I just wanted to remind you about Emily's baby shower tomorrow", she said.

"I'll be there", said Joy.

When Joy returned to the table Larry said, "I wish Mary Lou would stop calling at meal time. Don't they ever eat? I'm going to change before our shows come on."

"Mommy, Miss Edwards told us girls we could wear pants to the zoo. The principal gave his permission, but only for this one time, of course", Arlene said.

" Well I personally think it makes more sense for you to wear pants. I wish you could wear them every day", said Joy.

"I think she looks better in dresses. She's a girl not a boy", said Larry.

"It's bedtime and you can wear pajama pants to bed at least", said Joy.

Arlene went to bed and was soon asleep.

Larry stayed up to watch the news on television and by the time he came to bed Joy was asleep.

Joy was dreaming of Rhys and didn't awaken when Larry scooted up close behind her.

The next day was Saturday. Over at Mary Lou's house the guests had arrived for the baby shower.

Emily was in the last stage of pregnancy and was the picture of health. Since Emily's and her husband Sam's parents live in Veronaville, her mother and mother-in-law weren't able to come today.

Arlene sit on the sofa between her grandmother Joyce and Mary Lou.

Joyce Evans is a widow. Joy's father (Kevin) passed away a little over three years ago

Betty Jones was sitting next to Helen Stevens.

Helen is Mary Lou's mother.

Mary Lou's daughter Julie was chatting with Betty's daughter Judy . . .

"I don't think you'll do it. I dare you", said Judy.

"Alright, I'll ask her", said Julie.

Then Julie went over to Emily and asked THAT question.

"I think you should ask your mother about that", said Emily, "It's up to her to explain it to you when she thinks you're ready to know."

After all the guests had gone Emily thanked Mary Lou and hugged her goodbye.

A short while later Mary Lou's husband Peter came home from the movie theatre.

"Did you guys enjoy "Captain Kidd"?", asked Mary Lou.

"Yeah, I think Sam and I enjoyed it as much as Jimmy did", he said.

"Did you ladies enjoy yourselves and catch up on the latest gossip?", he asked.

"I think it went pretty well. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves", said Mary Lou.

The next day . . .

Sunday services started at 11 AM over at Buford Falls Church.

The Reverend Joseph Woods conducted the hour-long sermon. Reverend Woods has been pastor for as long as most of his congragation can remember.

Arlene (Joy and Larry's daughter) was sitting with her best friend Julie (Mary Lou and Peter's daughter) in the front pew on this side of the church.

Larry and Joy Anderson were sitting together in the pew behind the girls.

Behind them were Peter and Mary Lou Edwards.

Mary Lou's parents John and Helen Stevens were sitting behind their daughter and son-in-law.

Jimmy (Emily and Sam's son) sit on the back pew.

Mike and Judy (Betty and Ben's son and daughter) sit together on the front pew on the other side of the church.

Betty and Ben Jones sit together on the pew behind their childern.

Miss Nora Martin (the high school teacher) and Miss Janice Edwards (the elementary school teacher) were seated together. Both ladies teach at Buford Falls School.

Mr. Edward Best (the principal of Buford Falls School) was sitting with Rhys Sawyer, Buford Falls' newest resident.

Nurse Jane was sitting with her husband Dr. Thomas Brian.

Emily and Sam were seated together.

Mike got really aggravated having to listen to the hour-long sermon.

"This is not my scene!" he cried.

"My heart bleeds for you" said Judy.

(1940's slang expressions)

Mike stepped up to the podium. He would talk, then belch loudy. His parents should have put a stop to it, but . . .

They were too busy gossiping about Joy to notice Mike misbehaving.

Nurse Jane walked over to Rhys and started up a conversation. (In the background, Doctor Brian was watching them. )

"Hello, hello", she said, "I'm Nurse Jane. I'll take care of you if you should ever become ill."

"Thank you, I'll do that!", said Rhys.

She started swooning over Rhys and getting all dreamy-eyed. Then she turned and walked off.

Doctor Brian came over and started arguing at Rhys . . .

"That was MY wife you were flirting with", he said, "You're not the first pretty face that's gotten her attention, so get lost!"

"SHE came over and started talking to ME! I don't want your wife! You tell HER that I said to get lost!", said Rhys.

"What did you say to that nice young man?", she asked.

"I just reminded him that you were a married woman and way out of his league", he said.

When Rhys went out to the cemetary beside the church . . .

The pastor came over and asked, "Is there someone in particular you're looking for?"

"My grandmother Grace Sawyer is buried here", said Rhys.

"Grace was a wonderful lady", he said.

"So you knew my grandmother pretty well then", said Rhys.

"Yes, she contributed a lot of her time and money to the church", he said.

"I never got to meet her. Her grave has only a plain headstone. Do you know where I can purchase a fancier one?", asked Rhys.

"I have a catalog from the monument company. Perhaps one with an angel on it. Grace loved angels", he said.
"That would be perfect. Can you order one and let me know how much I owe?", said Rhys.

"Yes, of course, I'll pick out one I think she would like", he said.

Then Rhys left to go home.

Picket Fences! Part 10.1

Monday morning after Larry and Arlene had left for work and school . . .

Joy received a telephone call from Rhys.

"Hello!"

"Hey Beautiful! You want to go on a picnic with me?", he asked.

"Sure, if it's somewhere nobody I know will see us", she said.

"It's private. I own it", he said.

This wooded lot in the country was part of Rhys' inheritance from his grandmother's estate.

"It's beautiful out here in the country", said Joy.

"Yeah, I'd like to have a house built but it would be a shame to cut down the trees", said Rhys.

"Mister Conservationlist", she teased, tickling him.

"Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it'. And I quote the great Theodore Roosevelt", he said.

"Well I guess I shouldn't have joked about that. He evidently knew what he was talking about", she said.

Then Rhys grabbed her and gave her a passionate kiss.

"Come on, let's eat. I didn't eat any breakfast this morning", he said.

"I had pancakes but I'm still hungry", she said.

"You better watch out or you're going to get fat", he laughed.

Rhys and Joy sit on a log and ate the picnic lunch he had fixed at home.

"Well how was it?", he asked.

"It was delicious. I enjoyed every mouthful", she said.

"Rhys why was Dr. Brian arguing at you after the church service", she asked.

"His wife wanted to get a little too friendly with me and he told me to get lost", Rhys explained.

"What did you tell him?", she asked.

"To tell his wife I said to get lost", he said.

"Nurse Jane is the biggest flirt in town and he knows it", she said..

Rhys gave Joy a passionate kiss and . . .

She returned it with an equal passion of her own.

"I think I better be getting home, don't you?"

"Yeah, whatever you say beautiful", he said.

Then he gave her one more kiss and . . .

They left to return to their seperate houses on Shadetree Lane.

Meanwhile over at Emily and Sam Martin's house . . .

Emily called Mary Lou on the telephone.

"Mary Lou, guess what? I had twins! A boy and a girl we named Nathan and Nancy. Can you come over?"

"Sure, I can't wait to see them. I'll call Joy and ak her to come with me. We'll be there in a few minutes."

Mary Lou soon arrived at Emily's house . . .

"Why didn't Joy come over?", asked Emily.

"I tried to call her but she's not home. I'll call her tonight after supper", said Mary Lou.

Sam came home from work. He got a promotion and a big bonus. He'll need the extra money now that he has two new mouths to feed.

"I guess I'll be going on home. I got a lot of housework to do before Peter and Julie get home", said Mary Lou.

"Goodbye Mary Lou, thank you for coming", said Emily.

Picket Fences! Part 10.2

That same afternoon at Joy's house . . .

Arlene arrived home and brought her friend Julie home with her on the schoolbus.

Larry's carpool dropped his off a few minutes later. His neighbor Ben who also just arrived home, came over from across the street.

"Listen to the latest gossip Larry. Our new neighbor Rhys Sawyer . . .
"Is having an affair with . . .

"Joy Anderson", whispered Ben.

"Rhys Sawyer is on active duty alright, but not with MY wife", laughed Larry

(1940's slang: "active duty" means sexually promiscuous boy)

Larry told Ben goodbye and hurried into his house.

Joy met him at the door and gave him a tender kiss.

"I'll have supper ready by the time you change clothes", she said, "I told Arlene she could invite Julie to eat with us."

"I can hardly wait for tomorrow to come. The zoo is going to be so much fun", said Julie.

"Yeah, my mama said they had a big whale on exhibit", said Arlene.

Joy called everyone to supper a few minutes later.

"Our teacher gave each of us a shirt to wear tomorrow. Mine has a baby tiger on it", said Arlene.

"Mine has wolf cubs", said Julie.

When Joy went into the kitchen to clean up she got her first "baby bump".

"Are you kidding?"

(1940's slang)

Joy went back into the livingroom. Larry rubbed her belly and smiled.

"This is the best surprise I could ever imagine. You've made me very happy sweetheart", he said.
"I'm happier than I thought I'd be", she said.

Larry went into Arlene's room and read the girls a story.

When Mary Lou came to pick up Julie, Joy called her over.

"Come on in. I'm in the bathroom."

"Mary Lou I have to tell you something. I'm having an affair with Rhys", she said.

"What! Are you out of your mind?", said Mary Lou.

"This might or might not be his baby", she said.

"You want to bet on it", said Mary Lou.

"Please don't tell anybody. Say you'll help me keep my secret", said Joy.

"I don't approve, but I promise I won't tell anybody", said Mary Lou.

Then Mary Lou and Julie left to go home.

Picket Fences! Part 11

It's Monday morning and the elementary school students of Buford Falls are going to the zoo today.

Their teacher Miss Edwards went to the office and called transpotation.

"Please send a taxicab to Buford Falls School to pick up a group of five childern and two teachers", she said.

Miss Edwards, Miss Martin and the students (LtoR: Jimmy, Arlene, Mike, Judy and Julie) waited in front of the school for the taxicab.

When it arrived they all got in. Miss edwards told the driver to take them to the zoo.

The taxi let everyone off in front of the zoo entrance. Miss Martin started laughing at something Mike had said.
Then they went over to look at . . .

The different kinds of wolves.

Next they went to the play area. Jimmy jumped on the Jumping Sim Trampolinerampoline.

Judy was deciding what to play on first.

Arlene played on the Swing Kidz Deluxe Swing Sets

Jimmy finished jumping and decided to swing.

Julie and Mike played on the Rocking Red Cars.

Then they went to the aqurium to see the whale.

There was also tigers in cages and . . .

Mike watched the panther.

On the way to the picnic area they saw the elephants and the hippos.

Miss Martin cooked hotdogs on the grll. Everyone enjoyed them.

"I believe the childer have seen and done everything here. Don't you think?", said Miss Martin.

"Yes, I believe they have. Wait here with them and I'll call transpotation", said Miss Edwards.

"Please send a taxicab to the zoo. Our group is ready to go back to the school", said Miss Edwards.

The taxicab soon arrived to pick them up.

The taxicab dropped them off in front of the school.

The students stood in line and walked down to their classroom.

"Students, tomorrow each of you will write a story about one of the animals you saw."

When the bell rang the students walked in a line to catch the schoolbus to go home.

Meanwhile at Joy and Larry Anderson's house . . .

Larry had the day off from work and was doing some yard work.

He saw his neighbor Rhys Sawyer when he came out to get his newspaper.

"Hey Sawyer! Come over here!", Larry shouted.

"My friends call me Rhys and since we're neighbors, that goes for you, too", he said.

"Alright Rhys. You may call me Larry", said Larry.

"So Larry, why did you call me over?", asked Rhys.

"There's some gossip around town about you having an affair. It wouldn't normally be any of my business except . . .

"People are saying it's with my wife", he said.

"You shouldn't listen to gossip, because that's ALL it is", said Rhys, "Gossip!"

(Gossip is idle talk or rumor about the personal or private affairs of others, typically involving details not confirmed as being true.)

Then Rhys walked back across the street . . .

And Larry went in his house.

Joy was sitting on the couch and asked him to join.

"Who were you talking to outside just now?", asked Joy.

"Just that young fellow who lives across the street", he said.

"Grace's grandson, you mean?", said Joy.

"Yeah him", said Larry.

"Mary Lou and I went over to welcome him to the neighborhood when he moved in", said Joy, "He seemed pretty nice."

"I've heard he's "on active duty, but he's not much more than a kid. What he does shouldn't concern us, right?", Larry said.

"Right!", said Joy.

At 3:30 PM Arlene came home from school.

Joy served plates of spagetti to Larry and Arlene before joining them at the table.

"Arlene, did you have a good time at the zoo?", asked Larry.

"Yes, it was fun. I saw lots of animals, played on the swings and had a hotdog for lunch", said Arlene.

"That sounds like a good time to me", said Larry.

"Miss Edwards said we have to write a story tomorrow about one of the animals we saw. I'm going to write about an elephant!"

Larry rubbed Joy's belly.

"How's my boy doing in there?", he asked.

"He's going to be a big healthy boy or either his mama is just getting fat", she joked.

"Are you feeling alright sweetheart? You didn't say much at supper", he said.

"I feel fine. Just a little tired. I think I'll turn in early", said Joy.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure Arlene gets to bed", he said.

Picket Fences! Part 12

After the disagreement with Larry that afternoon, Rhys went back across the street . . .

He read the newspaper while . . .

The maid Jasmyn Carlson did what she was hired to do.

"I finished my work. Do you want me to stay and hangout?", she asked Rhys.

"Yeah sure. I think we can find something to do", he said.

Oops! Jasmyn instantly changed into maternity clothes. Her maid's outfit was keeping her pregnancy from showing.

Rhys rubbed her belly.

He was excited that she was pregnant with his baby.

Rhys gave Jasmyn a romantic hug.

Just a few minutes later, Jasmyn started into labor.

When the pains susided . . .

She delivered a beautful healthy baby boy.

The baby has tan skin, brown hair and grey eyes.

"Rhys, we have a son", she said.

Jasmyn handed the baby to Rhys.

"What do you want to name him?", she asked.

"I want to name him Ryan after my father", he said.

Rhys gave the baby a bottle of milk and put him in his crib.

When Rhys went back into the livingroom Jasmyn said "What am I going to do? I'm a NPC and it's no way I can keep the baby. He'll probably be taken by Social Services."

"No, he's the only family I got. He's not going to an orphanage", said Rhys, "I'll take care of him."

"I have to go now. I'll see you tomorrow! ", she said.

Then Jasmyn walked out the door . . .

Got in her van and drove off.

Rhys sit on the couch and wondered, "What have I gotten myself into?"

Rhys took a quick shower and changed into a fresh shirt.

Then he called Mary Lou.

"Hello!", said Mary Lou.

"Mary Lou, this is Rhys. Can you come over?", he asked.

"Sure, I'll be there in a few minutes", she said.

When Mary Lou arrived she asked, "Why did you ask me over?"

"I need your help. You see, I got a baby and I'm not exactly sure what to do with him", said Rhys.

"Is it your baby?", she asked.

"Yeah. You wait right here and I'll go get him", he said.

Rhys went to his bedroom and returned with the baby. Then he handed him to Mary Lou.

"He's so little. When was he born?", she asked.

"This morning", said Rhys.

"What's his name?", she asked.

"I named him Ryan after my father", said Rhys.

"He's beautiful but he smells awful", she said.

"Yeah, I know. I won't sure how to give him a bath", said Rhys.

Mary Lou took the baby into the kitchen and put him in the sink.

"There you go Ryan. Doesn't that feel good?", she asked.

"Now you smell as sweet as you look", she said.

She gave him a bottle of milk . . .
And put him in his crib for a nap.

Then Mary Lou returned to the livingroom and sit on the couch . . .

"Rhys, who's your son's mama?", asked Mary Lou.

"My maid Jasmyn Carlson. She couldn't take him with her. She said he would probably go to Social Services. I won't going to let my son go to an orphanage", said Rhys.

"Jasmyn is one of the maid's from Service, right? I didn't think NPC's were able to have childern", said Mary Lou.

"I didn't either", said Rhys.

"I got to go home. Call me if you need me", said Mary Lou.

"Thank you Mary Lou", he said.

Picket Fences! Part 13

After Mary Lou got home from Rhys Sawyer's place; she thought long and hard about whether or not to tell Joy that Rhys had a baby. Since it would be the newest gossip around town, she decided it was better if Joy heard it from her first.

"Joy, can you come over?", she asked.

"Sure, I'll be there in a few minutes", said Joy.

Joy walked in the front door a few minutes later.

She went into the kitchen where she knew she would find Mary Lou.

"Your stomach is getting so big!", she said.

"I don't have much longer before the baby comes", said Joy.

"Speaking of babies, Emily and Sam's twins grew up to toddlers yesterday". said Mary Lou.

"Nancy is a real beauty. She looks a lot like Emily."

"And Nathan is a cutie. He doesn't favor Jimmy much though", said Mary Lou.

"Well, Jimmy looks more like Sam and Nathan must take after Emily's side of the family", said Joy.

"While we're on the subject of babies, there's something I have to tell you. Rhys called me this morning and asked me to come over to his place. Joy, he has a son with his maid", said Mary Lou.

"Joy, are you alright?", Mary Lou asked concerned.

""Yes, I was just shocked for a minute", said Joy.

"Rhys decided to have the baby live with him because the maid is a NPC and she told him that Social Services would probably take him", said Mary Lou.

"Yeah, Rhys wouldn't want his son to grow up in an orphanage like he did", said Joy.

"Thank you for telling me", said Joy.

"You're welcome. I thought it was better coming from me", said Mary Lou.

Then Joy left to go home . . .

To her house next door. . .

Now that she knew why Rhys hadn't called her lately, she decided to call him.

"Hello Rhys."

"Hey Beautiful! How are you doing ?"

"Why haven't you called to see how I'm doing? Were you too busy making a baby with your maid?", she said.

"That happened before I met you. She was just another woo hoo. I didn't think she'd have a baby', he said.

"That's the problem Rhys, you didn't think", she said and hung up.

She relaxed on the bed and thought about Rhys. She wondered why he hadn't called her lately.

She took a relaxing bubblebath. She could feel the tension in her body melting away.

"Who am I to be telling him that he should have been more careful? Look what I got myself into", she thought to herself.

"Who am I to be telling Rhys HE didn't think? Look at the mess I've gotten myself into. I guess I'll call him back and apologize", she thought to herself.

But before she could get to the telephone, she started into labor.

Larry and Arlene had arrived home from work and school. They ran into the bedroom just in time to . . .

Witness the birth of Kevin Lawrence Anderson. The tan skinned infant has brown hair and grey eyes.

"We have a son", said Joy, "I named him for my father and for you."

Picket Fences! Part 14

The next morning after Larry and Arlene had left for work and school, Joy called Mary Lou.
"Mary Lou, I had my baby yesterday afternoon. I can hardly wait for you to see him", she said.

"If that's the case why didn't you call me right after he was born?", Mary Lou asked.
"I wanted to wait until Larry was gone before you saw him. I want you to tell me who you think Kevin looks more like. Larry or Rhys?", Joy explained.
"Alright, I'll be right over", said Mary Lou.

A few minutes later Mary Lou walked in the front door.
"Alright, where's that beautiful son of yours?", she called.
"In the nursery", called Joy, "Come on in."

Joy took Kevin out of his crib and handed him to Mary Lou.
"Well, do you think he looks like Larry or Rhys?", she asked already knowing the answer.
"Joy you might not want to hear this, but this baby and Rhys' son with his maid could pass for twins", said Mary Lou.

"Well so far Larry hasn't noticed our son's resemblance to Rhys, but that might just be because he doesn't have any reason to suspect it", said Joy.
"Let's hope he or nobody else sees the babies side by side any time soon", said Mary Lou, "And try not to worry. Everything will be alright."
Then she hurried out the front door to go home.

That afternoon when Arlene came home from school she was jumping for joy. She had gotten an A+ on the paper she wrote about the elephant at the zoo.

Then Larry came home a few minutes later. He had gotten promoted at work to Junior Executive.

After he took a bath and changed clothes Larrry went down to the nursery. He took Kevin out of his crib and cuddled him. Larry was getting very attached to his son.

After supper that night Joy called her mother (Joyce Evans) and invited her over to meet her new grandson.

Joyce arrived a few minutes later.

She gave Joy a hug.
"I'm so happy for you and Larry", said Joyce, "And thank you for naming the baby after your father. He would be so happy."

Larry brought Kevin into the livingroom to meet his grandma. Joyce talked to the baby.
"He's really a beautiful baby", she said.
"Yes, he's a chip off the old block", said Larry proudly.

Joyce sit with Arlene on the couch and snuggled. She thought her grandaughter might need some extra attention.

After a couple of hours had passed, Joyce said, "It's getting late. I better be getting on home. I don't like being out after dark."

After Joyce left Arlene was sitting between her parents on the couch.
"Mama, what's an affair?", she asked.
"Why in the world do you want to know that?", asked Joy.
"Mike was teasing me at school about you having one", Arlene answered.

"Your mama is married to me!", Larry interrupted, "That Jones boy is just repeating gossip he heard from his parents. I bet he doesn't even know what it is himself."

"Arlene, you need to learn not to pay any attention to gossip. Folks who gossip don't always know if it's true or not. Now forget about what Mike said and go on to bed", said Joy.

"I wonder why anybody would start a rumor about you of all people having an affar. Just goes to show how vindictive some people can be", said Larry, "The best thing we can do is just ignore it until new gossip replaces it, alright?"

Then he gave Joy a romantic kiss before she could answer.

Across town at Buford Falls Church . . .

Pastor Woods called Rhys Sawyer . . .
"Rhys the tombstone for your grandmother came today. I'd like for you to come by to see if it's what you had in mind."

"I'm sure I'll like it. Thanks Pastor Woods. I'll be right over", said Rhys.

Picket Fences! Part 15

Over at Buford Falls Church . . .

Pastor Woods was waiting for Rhys in the church cemetary.

He showed him Grace's tombstone.
"I picked this one with the baby angel on it. I think Grace would like it and it has a special meaning for me in particular", he said, "I hope it's what you wanted."

"It's beautiful. Exactly what I had in mind", said Rhys.

"Pastor, I can tell that it upsets you to talk about Grace. How well did you know my grandmother?", he asked.

"Come sit down and I'll tell you, if you have time to listen to rantings of an old man ", he said.

" Rhys, the first time I saw Grace was when I took over as pastor of Buford Falls Church. I was fresh out of seminary and newly married to a girl I thought I loved. Grace came with her parents to every service. As time went on, Grace started stopping by the church to see me. We would just talk at first, but eventually we fell in love. After that things became more serious between us . . .

"I remember one afternoon in particular, Grace was sitting at the piano playing a hymn. She looked so lovely and played so beautifully."

"I stood behind her and watched her play for a few minutes. She must have sensed I was there . . .

Because she got up, came over to me and gave me a tender kiss."

"We sit there in the church and cuddled on one of the pews. We talked about how we'd like to get married after I divorced my wife. We both knew it was an impossible dream because if I divorced, that would have ended my ministry."

"Then I gave Grace a romantic kiss and she kissed me back."

"And before we knew what was happening, we started making out and our lovemaking went too far."

"Afterwards, I kissed Grace one last time . . .

"We never spoke of that afternoon again. We remained best friends, but that was all after that ", he said.

"A short time later, Grace went to stay with her grandmother in Pleasantview for a few months. That must have been when your father was born and she gave him up for adoption. I didn't know I had a son until after Grace died and named you as her heir", said the pastor.

"Now that we know about each other, I'd like for us to be friends", said Reverend Woods.
"I'd like that, too", said Rhys.

"Is what I hear true, you have a son with your maid?", asked the pastor.
"Yes, I named him Ryan after my father", said Rhys.
"Please bring him by sometimes. I'd like to meet my great-grandson", said the pastor.

Reverand Woods gave Rhys a hug goodbye.

Then Rhys left to get home before the maid had to leave.

"Grace, I told our grandson everything. I hope it was the right decision."

Picket Fences! Part 16

A few days later over at Joy Evans' house . . .

Joy went to the bathroom mirror to gussy up . . .

Then she called Transpotation on the telephone.

"Please send a taxicab to 12 Greenway Drive."

When the taxicab arrived she told the driver to take her to Moo's Mini Mart.

The taxicab let her off in front of the market.

When Joyce entered the mart, she couldn't help but notice an extremely handsome man drinking a soda.

Joyce had come to the Mini Mart to shop and shop she would. She approuched the him and asked, "Excuse me, I need to get something out of that case. Would you please step aside?"

"Sure, anything you say beautiful", he answered.

"I appreciate the compliment young man but my name is Joyce, not beautiful", she said.

"My name is Rhys, not young man and you ARE beautiful", he said.

Joyce finished her shopping and . . .

Paid the cashier.

"Thank you for shopping at Moo's Mini Mart", said the cashier.

Rhys also picked up a few items.

"Here you are Beautiful", he said, "Keep the change."

"Thank you Rhys, you're the best", the cashier said.

Joyce went outside and used the public telephone to call Transpotation.

"I need a taxicab to take me home", she said.

She sit on the bench to wait for the taxicab.

"Would you like to go get something to eat?", asked Rhys.

"I've already called a taxicab to take me home", said Joyce.

"You're in my way again", said Joyce.

"I thought you might need some company and I know I need some lunch", said Rhys.

"I think maybe I do", she said, "I make a pretty tasty grilled cheese sandwich."

When the taxicab arrived, Joyce and Rhys got in.

The taxicab driver took them to Joyce's house.

"You have a nice little place here", said Rhys.

"Thank you, I like it", she said.

"Sit down at the table. I'll have the sandwiches ready in a few minutes", she said.

"Where did you live before you came to Buford Falls?", asked Joyce.

"I'm from Pleasantview", said Rhys.

"That's a lovely little town. My late husband's family was from there", she said.

"I didn't get to see a whole lot of the town or get to know the people. I spent most of my life there in the orphanage. I had just became an adult, right before I moved here", he said.

"I hope you'll find Buford Falls to be more to your liking. You don't sound like you had too good of a life in Pleasantview", she said.

"It wasn't all bad. The little time I spent there after I grew up was quite enjoyable", he said.

Then Rhys noticed the portrait hanging on the wall over a urn on the table.

"Was he your husband?", he asked.

"Yes, that's Kevin. That portrait was painted when he was young", she said.

"How long have you been a widow?", asked Rhys.

"A little over four years now", said Joyce.

"I would think you get pretty lonely sometimes without your husband", said Rhys.

"Yes, it does get lonesome, but having my daughter and grandchildern living close by helps", said Joyce.

"You don't look old enough to have a grown daughter, much less grandchildern", he said surprised.

"Hey, look at the time . . .

"I got to be getting on home", he said.

"I hope you can come again when you're able to stay longer", she said.

"Sure, it's just that this is the first time I left my son with a nanny", he said.

"Yes, of course. I understand, I was a young parent one time myself", she said.

Joyce gave Rhys a tender kiss goodbye.

The he left to go home.

Picket Fences! Part 17

Rhys came home from Joyce's house . . .

He went into the nursery to check on Ryan. He still couldn't believe his son was already a toddler.

Rhys paid the nanny and gave her a tip.

Melvissa Shankel, the nanny from Service had surprisingly taken good care of Ryan. Rhys decided he would be using her on a regular basis.

Rhys got into bed . . .

And was soon sleeping like a baby himself.

The next morning Jasmyn Carlson arrived for work as usual.
She went into the house and walked down to the nursery.

Ryan was awake and needed some attention.

Jasmyn took him out of his crib. She gave him a family kiss and talked to him.

She took him into the bathroom, gave him a bath and dressed him in his everyday clothes.

She put the toddler in his highchair and gave him a bowl of oatmeal.

After Ryan finished eating . . .

Jasmyn put him in his room. He was being entertained playing with the lighthouse.

Jasmyn went into the kitchen area and started doing the work she was paid to do.

Rhys was finally getting up.

He saw Jasmyn in the kitchen.

"Good morning Beautiful. Is our son awake?", he asked.

"Yes, he's been bathed, fed and he's in his room playing", she answered.

"How about me and you playing later?", Rhys asked.

"Sure, I'll stay and hang out after I finish my work", she said.

Then he gave her a romantic kiss.

He joined Ryan playing with the lighthouse.

He changed Ryan's diaper.
"You still smell awful", Rhys told him.

He gave the toddler another bath.
"You've had two baths today and Daddy hasn't even had one", said Rhys.

He carried Ryan into the livingroom and talked to him.

While Rhys was doing his exercises, Ryan was trying to do some, too.

"You look like you're ready for a nap, how about it?", said Rhys.

He got a bottle out of the refrigerator and gave it to Ryan.

Ryan finished the bottle and took off down the hall to his bedroom.

Rhys put him in his crib and gave him a nite-nite kiss.

Rhys looked out the window . . .

Then he took a quick shower.

And "gussied up" in front of the bathroom mirror.

He went out in the backyard where he had seen Jasmyn earlier. He strutted over to her . . .

And said . . .
"Let's go inside and play."

At the Anderson house across the street, Joy and Larry were having a birthday party for their son Kevin.

When it was time for the infant to grow up, Larry brought him to his birthday cake.

They all joined in the celebration.

"It's time for you to grow up", said Larry.
Then he did the "baby toss" and . . .

Kevin grew up to a toddler who looked a whole lot like their neighbor Rhys Sawyer, who lives across the street.

Joy was sitting on the couch with her mother, who had been invited to the party.

"Kevin reminds me of someone, but I don't quite remember who", said Joyce.

"Maybe one of your distance relatives?", said Mary Lou

"No, I don't think it's that. Maybe it'll come to me, once I think about it. My memory just isn't as good as it used to be", Joyce said.

Picket Fences! Part 18

Later that same night Joy received a telephone call from Mary Lou . . .
"Hi Mary Lou. What's wrong?", she asked.

"Julie has the German measles. I thought I better call and let you know since she was with Arlene at the party this afternoon", said Mary Lou.

"Thanks for letting me know", said Joy, "Is Julie alright?"

"She's not feeling that bad, but poor thing is broken out really bad", said Mary Lou.

"I called Emily to let her know about Julie and to ask if Jimmy had them. She said he had them when they lived in Veronaville. After I talked to Emily, Betty called to tell me that Judy and Mike both have them", said Mary Lou.

"Who was that on the telephone?", Larry asked.

"It was Mary Lou", said Joy.

"I figured as much", said Larry.

"She called to tell me that Julie has German measles. I suspect Arlene will be broken out soon. I was wondering if Kevin should stay wilh my mom until Arlene's past the contagious period", said Joy.

"I think that's a good idea. No need for him to get sick if he doesn't have to", said Larry.

"Hello Mom, do you think you can keep Kevin at your house for a few days? German measles is going around school and Arlene will probably come down with them. We'd like to keep Kevin away from her so he won't get them, too", explained Joy.

"I guess I can manage him for a few days. I still got your old crib and that Noah's Ark you use to love to play with", said Joyce, "Sure, bring him on over."

"You're going to grandma's house Kevin. Want that be fun?", Joy told the toddler, "Tell Daddy bye-bye."

Joy walked the short distance to her mother's house.

"Now try not to spoil your grandson too much while he's here", said Joy.

"It might be hard, but I'll try", said Joyce.

"Thank you Mom", said Joy.

"You be a good boy for Grandma, Okay?", said Joy.

"Okay!", said Kevin.

She gave him a "Family Kiss" goodbye . . .

And left to go back home.

Joyce sit on the floor with Kevin and played with the toy xylophone.

Whenever he hit the bars with the mallet he would laugh. Seeing the toddler's beautiful smile jogged Joyce's memory . . .

She remembered seeing that same smile a few days ago.

Her grandson looked like Rhys Sawyer, the nice young man she met in the Mini Mart. She didn't like jumping to conclusions, but she had heard the gossip around town about Joy cheating on Larry.

"Hello Rhys, can you come over? I'd like for you to bring Ryan. My grandson is spending a few days with me and they might enjoy playing together", said Joyce.

"Yeah, sure. Ryan ain't played with any other kids. He might enjoy it", said Rhys, "We'll be there in a few minutes."

Rhys arrived at Joyce's house a few minutes later. He had forgotten to ask Joyce how old her grandson was, but hopefully not too much older than Ryan.

When Rhys came into the house, he was relieved to see a toddler in Joyce's arms.

"This is my grandson Kevin", she said.

"I think Ryan and Kevin are about the same age", she said, "Let's put them down over there with the Noah's Ark."

The two little boys played together while Joyce and Rhys chatted.

"Rhys, when you were here the other day, I forgot to ask what street you live on", said Joyce.

"I live in the old Sawyer place on Shadetree Lane. Grace Sawyer was my grandmother", he said.

"I remember Grace. I use to speak to her whenever I visited my daughter. She and Grace were neighbors", said Joyce.

"My daughter is Joy Anderson. Do you know her and her husband Larry?", asked Joyce.

"Yeah, I know Joy and Larry. I didn't know they had a son though", he said.

"Rhys, how well do you know my daughter?", asked Joyce.

"Joy came over with her friend Mary Lou to welcome me to the neighborhood when I moved in", said Rhys.

"Rhys, I don't think you're telling me the whole truth", she said.

"What is it you want to know Joyce?", he asked.

"I've heard gossip around town that Joy was having an affair and from the looks of my grandson, I think it was with you", said Joyce.

"Yes, she met me a couple of times at community lots and we went on a picnic. We only did woo hoo the one time when she came over my place", said Rhys.

"You're Kevin's father. Look at him. He has your brown hair and blue-grey eyes. Rhys, he has your smile", said Joyce.

Rhys went over and played with Kevin. He tickled him and made him laugh.

Then Rhys picked up the little boy.
"You do kinda look like me. I wonder why your mama didn't tell me about you", he said, knowing the toddler didn't understand.

Rhys hugged his son goodbye before he put him back down on the floor.

"Thank you Joyce for letting me meet my son", said Rhys.

"Rhys, don't let Joy know I told you", said Joyce.

"I won't. She's going to tell me herself", he said.

Then he picked up Ryan, walked out the door and left to go home.

Default Picket Fences! Part 19.1

Picket Fences! Part 19.1

At the Anderson house, Joy and Larry's daughter Arlene has recovered from German measles. She missed three days of school but since she's an A+ student, her grades didn't suffer too badly.

She looked happy as she got on the schoolbus. Today is her birthday and this afternoon her family
and friends will watch her grow up into a teenager at her birthday party.

A few minutes after Arlene left for school, her Larry's carpool arrived to take him to work.

Joy called her mother Joyce . . .
"Mom, Arlene is over the measles. She went back to school today. Do you need me to come get Kevin or can you bring him home?"

"I'll bring him home this afternoon when I come to Arlene's party. That will give you the day free to get things ready", said Joyce.
"Thanks Mom. I'll see you this afternoon then", said Joy.

As soon as Joy hung up from talking to Joyce the telephone starting ringing.
"Hello", she said.

"Joy, I need to talk to you. Can you meet me somewhere? How about the zoo?", asked Rhys.
"Alright, I'll be there in a few minutes. I'll meet you inside", she said.

Joy arrived at the zoo shortly.

And Rhys walked in the front entrance a few minutes afterwards.

They went over to the benches to sit down.

"I haven't seen you for awhile. How have you been? You were pretty upset the last time I talked to you on the telephone", he said.
"I was, but I thought about it and decided what happened between you and your maid was before we got involved", she said.
"So you forgive me?", he asked.
"Yes, I'm alright with you having a son with your maid", she said.

"Joy, why didn't you tell me YOU had a son?", he asked.

"There really wasn't any reason I should", she said.

"Joy, isn't me being his father reason enough?", asked Rhys.
"Rhys, Larry's his father", she said.

Rhys stood up and shouted,"You're lying!"

Then he walked away.

He called a taxicab.

When he got off the telephone Joy was waiting for him.
"Rhys, please let me explain", she said.

"After I talked to you that afternoon, I went into labor and Kevin was born. Then Larry and Arlene came home and Larry thought the baby was his. He was so proud and happy. I didn't have the heart to tell him you were Kevin's father. It would break his heart if I told him now. Please understand", she cried.
"Alright, I'll go along with your little charade for now, but I want to be able to see my son and get to know him", said Rhys.

Then he got into the waiting taxicab.

Later that afternoon back over at Joy's house . . .

"Daddy, how much longer do I have to wait before my party starts?", asked Arlene.
"As soon as Grandma Joyce brings Kevin home and the other guests get here", said Larry.

Joyce brought Kevin home a little later.
"He's such a good boy. It was a pleasure having him", said Joyce.
"Did you have fun at Grandma's house?", asked Joy.
"Un huh. Play Ry", said Kevin.
"Isn't that cute? He's trying to talk", said Joy.

The guests had arrived and were waiting for Arlene to blow out the candles on her birthday cake.
{LtoR: Peter Edwards, Jimmy Martin, Mike Jones, Judy Jones, Nancy Martin and Julie Edwards.

Arlene made a wish and blew out the candles.

Everyone cheered and wished her happy birthday!

Arlene started to grow up and . . .

She grew up into a very pretty teenager.

Arlene flirted and played with Jimmy.

And Jimmy's little brother Nathan was fighting with Julie.

Nathan has grown up into a cute, but angry little boy.

While everyone was occupied outside, Joyce went inside to call Rhys.
"Hello Rhys, it's Joyce. Since I'm in the neighborhood, would you like some company?", she asked.

"Sure, come on over", he said.
"I'll be there as soon as I say my goodbyes here", she said.

"Arlene, I'm glad I was here to see you grow up. I just wish your grandfather could have been here", said Joyce.

"I'm glad you were here, too", said Arlene., as Joyce gave her a hug.

"Mom you don't have to hurry off. Come in and have a cup of coffee", said Joy.
"No, I better be getting on home. You know I don't like to be out after dark", said Joyce.

"Bye Mom", said Joy.
"Bye sweetheart", said Joyce.

Then Joyce walked across the street to Rhys' place.

Default Picket Fences! Part 19.2

Picket Fences! Part 19.2

Joyce walked across the street to Rhys' place . . .

When she entered the house . . .

Rhys came down the hall to greet her.

He gave her a romantic hug.
"I've been thinking about you ever since you left the other day", she said.
"Have you been thinking what I hope you have?", he asked.
"I think you know", she said.

Rhys surprised her when he picked her up in his arms and carried her down the hall . . .

To his bedroom and laid her on his bed. They made out.

Then in the middle of their lovemaking Rhys stopped and started to get up.
"Wait, where are you going?", asked Joyce.
"Ryan's crying. I'll be back in a few minutes", he said.

Rhys took Ryan out of his crib and took the toddler to the potty.
"Now I want you to go back to sleep. Alright?", said Rhys.
"Sure Daddy", he said.

Rhys returned to the bedroom where Joyce was waiting.
"Was he alright?", she asked.
"Sure, he just had to go to the toilet", said Rhys.

"Now where were we?", he asked.

Rhys gave Joyce a romantic kiss.

"Do you want me Joyce?", he asked.
"What woman in her right mind wouldn't", she answered.

Woo Hoo!

"You want to spend the night?", he asked.

"I'd like nothing better, but I better not. I'd have a hard time explaining if anybody was to see me coming out of your house in the morning", she said.

"You sound like somebody else I know", he laughed.

"You're welcome to come back again when you're in the neighborhood", he said.

"Thank you. I might just take you up on the offer", she said.

"Bye Rhys. It was fun", said Joyce.
"Yeah, for me, too", he said.

Rhys went back to bed . . .

And Joyce left to go home.
