People don't seem to understand that its not fesable just to wait around for technology to increase to where terriformation and better space travel would be acheivable. We need to work on it to get it to that stage.
Its going to take years and years of faliure and small advancements before we are anywhere close to being able to set up a base on the moon, and mars will be many times more difficult than that. So we might as well start failing now so that we can learn and create better technology than waiting round focusing only on our planet until something comes along and makes it too late.
Our species has only been around for a short time, yet we still see ourselves as invincable. It would increase our chances of survival so much the more planets and bases we have to be spread across. Plus there would be no reason to control our population numbers which we are on the verge of having to do now.
To sum it up, living on mars won't happen in our lifetime, but by starting now will insure that it will happen in time for future generations to benefit.
