Here's what I did: I turned the empty Downtown lot into a farmer's market and placed everything you buy in later expansions on it (seeds, berries, baking goods, mask stand, candle stand, poster stands, etc). Then I downloaded the vegetable cart upgrade from Simslice (
http://simslice.com/freebies/ProgramsAndPatches.html) which makes it so you can place the veggie cart with
Farmer Gardener Bob in Downtown. Now my sims can go buy seeds and groceries or sell produce without dragging along the entire family and all their pets. They can also buy all the little knick-knacks they want in one convenient spot, but there is a catch: the posters and candles require a "return home" action that Downtown doesn't trigger, so they will remain in the sim's inventory when they get home. The solution is simply to make them go somewhere that triggers the "return home," so I make them jump into the Magic Town hole and immediately return, which prompts them to go empty their inventory of their treasures so you can place them. It's not elegant, but to me it beats having them run all over creation to buy stuff.
Anyway, this is not exactly the same as going to Old Town alone, but with the vegetable cart hack you will be able to buy everything Downtown that you could in Old Town and will no longer need to go to Old Town for anything except the ambiance (which is admittedly quite nice). You can even make a pet adoption center Downtown if you want. I think the only thing you can't get Downtown is Miss Lucille--the mask stands do not summon her Downtown, so you'll still need to go to Old Town if you want to revive a dead sim or roll the dice for a rejuvenating fortune.
One final advantage: needs decay slower Downtown than they do in Old Town! (Why? I do not know!)
